PROMPT Speech Therapy for Motor Speech Disorders

In our approach, we select word targets that are significant and meaningful to the client, enhancing their connection and motivation toward the learning process. Each session involves a PROMPT-trained speech-language pathologist (SLP) creating engaging activities or games where these words can be naturally repeated. This not only makes the practice fun but also reinforces learning.

During these activities, the clinician will physically assist the client by using hands-on techniques to guide the motor movements required for speech. This tactile support is crucial as it helps the client feel the correct form and movement of the mouth and jaw while speaking.

Learning these new motor skills requires consistent practice, and family involvement is vital. Family members play a crucial role in reinforcing these practices at home, which is essential for progress.

The PROMPT-trained SLP carefully chooses specific words that will help address particular motor challenges the client faces. For example, if a client tends to speak with a clenched jaw, the therapist might select words that require a more open jaw position, like 'ah'. Target words might include simple yet functional items and phrases such as 'on', 'mama', 'pop', or 'all gone', which are not only practical but also integral to everyday communication.
